Some Other Freedom by Catherine L. Byrne

Some Other Freedom

Book Blurb
A repressed gay teacher’s life starts to unravel when a new colleague turns out to be his past, secret lover, but will he choose his secure career or risk losing everything by being his true self?

Ambitious teacher Anthony, who is firmly in the closet, works at a very conservative school, carefully living up to expectations in order to further his career.

After drinking too much at a wedding, however, he meets a gorgeous man and can’t resist having a passionate liaison with him.

Weeks later, Anthony is engaged to his girlfriend, but then his secret lover turns up at school as the new teacher in his department…

I really love this author's writing style. She's very good at letting the plot flow around the characters. I immediately felt emotional for Anthony's lot in life right from the start. Anyone who is gay can tell you being in the closet sucks. The two main characters played off of each other really well, which made me want to keep reading. I absolutely adored Jake from page one.

The author also did a wonderful job of using secondary characters to explain Anthony's situation though-out the story. I found his relationship with his family a little sad, as they were homophobic which clearly made Anthony uncomfortable but at the same time you could tell he was used to it.

I was drawn in to the story on the first page!
